Porcelain Crowns also known as dental crowns or tooth crowns are made of ceramic that look and feel just like your natural tooth enamel. A dental crown is simply a tooth shaped cap that completely covers the tooth to restore its original shape and size while protecting the underlying tooth from further deterioration. Dental crowns are stronger and allow also more versatility, compared to Porcelain Veneers, in changing the contour, orientation and shade of a tooth.

In some instances where there is a missing tooth next to the teeth that require crowns, those teeth may also be used as abutments to support a porcelain dental bridge. A dental bridge is a segment of dental crowns that are joined together to replace a missing tooth or to help provide added strength and stability to teeth.

TREATMENT PROCEDURE FOR TOOTH CROWNS

The procedure requires two appointments.

Visit 1 Tooth surface preparation
Your cosmetic dentist will remove 0.5 to 0.75 mm of enamel from the tooth surface in order to make room for the porcelain laminate. A model or impression of your prepared tooth is made and sent to the dental laboratory, which will construct your porcelain veneer. The fabrication of the veneer takes approximately 2 weeks, a plastic temporary veneer is fitted, where possible or required for the interim period.

Visit 2 Application of dental veneer
Before bonding the veneer, your cosmetic dentist will examine the fit and colour, adjusting the veneer as needed to ensure a proper fit and natural aesthetics. Your tooth will be cleaned, polished and roughened to enable a strong bonding process.

In certain cases, an additional follow up visit may be required for shade analysis or further aesthetic assessment and so as to ensure the veneering treatment has been successful.
